Sustainable fashion needs more than organic cotton – it needs new questions

Why I won't stop questioning what counts as ‘sustainable’ Sustainable fashion is everywhere. Every major label now has a ‘green’ collection, uses organic cotton and advertises recycled polyester. But every time I look closer, I see the same problem:

The materials are ‘sustainable’, but the mindset remains the same.

What does organic cotton achieve if it has plastic threads woven into it? What is the benefit of recycled polyester if it ends up as microplastics in the sea?

I say that sustainability starts with asking the right questions. And I ask these questions all the time.

  • Why is there no plastic-free elastic band?
  • Why don't companies disclose their supply chains?
  • Why do we talk about ‘green fashion’ but not about a genuine circular economy?

When someone asks me what I do for a living, I sometimes say:

I am a bridge builder.

I bring together people who didn't know they needed each other. I convince weaving mills to experiment with natural fibres. I inspire designers to choose not only sustainable fabrics, but also sustainable details. And I see a new awareness developing. Slowly but surely.

Because real change doesn't start with certificates or marketing campaigns. It starts with people who are willing to think in new ways and leave old ways behind.

And that's exactly where I accompany my clients.
