Organic cultivation

GOTS-certified products are made from organic fibres that are cultivated according to the principles of organic farming. In relation to our products, this means that the cotton is cultivated without the use of synthetic pesticides, insecticides, herbicides or genetic engineering.

Social criteria

GOTS-certified products are produced responsibly. The social criteria of this standard are based on the norms of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and the standards of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). GOTS contains binding social criteria: prohibition of child labour, safe workplace, living wages, working time regulations, prohibition of discrimination.

Quality and environmental management

GOTS-certified products are environmentally friendly. When processing organically produced fibres, it is important to clearly separate them from conventional materials so that organic products remain clearly recognisable. Strict guidelines apply to the use of dyes and other additives: they may only be used if they are harmless in terms of toxicity and biodegradability. Certain problematic additives are strictly prohibited.

Traceable supply chain

GOTS-certified products are traceable and transparent from field to finished product. It is a holistic standard that sets clear and strict requirements for the entire textile supply chain. This makes it possible to trace the path of every GOTS-certified product – from the cultivation of the raw fibre to the finished textile. The process begins in the field, continues through spinning, weaving or knitting, and continues with wet finishing, garment manufacturing, packaging and labelling before the organic textile reaches the market. In order for a product to carry the GOTS label, all companies involved along the supply chain must be certified.

Independent certification system

GOTS production is certified by independent experts. The control system is based on independent certification bodies accredited by GOTS. These bodies inspect the participating companies directly on site and certify them. In this way, the certification system ensures that the integrity of GOTS-certified textiles is maintained. The audits take place annually at the companies' premises. CHARLE and the upstream narrow fabric weaving mill are inspected by Ecocert.

The GOTS seal consists of a white shirt inside a green circle. The words GOTS Global Organic Textile Standard are written around the circle. The licence number of the company CHARLE Berlin is located below this seal. A cotton ribbon and leaves from a cotton plant can be seen in the background.
